Speaker 1: You're listening to sleep Tight Science. Did you know that the average person farts twelve to twenty five times every single day. That is a whole lot of gas. Did you also know that we fart more when we are sleeping than when we are awake. The word fart comes from the Old English word fjorton, which means to break wind. You might also have heard it called flatulence, which is the medical word or gas produced in the stomach or bowels. So why do we fart? One reason we fart is because of the types of food we eat. Foods like beans, fried foods, and onions can cause you to fart more often. When we are eating or drinking, we are not just swallowing our food and drink, but air along with it. The air contains gases like nitrogen and oxygen. Small amounts of these gases travel through your digestive system as you are digesting your food. Other gases like hydrogen and methane are made when your food is broken down into large intestine. All of these gases in your digestive system have to get out somehow, so they often come out as a fart. Undigested carbohydrates are also a common cause of gas our stomach and small intestine cannot break down these foods. These undigested carbohydrates are things like sugars that fruits and artificial sweeteners contain soluble fibers, or things that are able to be solved in water. They can be found in dried beans, nuts, and fruits, or insoluble fibers things that cannot be dissolved in water, which can be found in root vegetables and wheat brand or starches like corn, wheat and potatoes. Instead, these carbohydrates move into the large intestine when bacteria starts to break them down, releasing intestinal gas or farts in the process. But you know, farting could also just be your body's way of letting you know that it's time to go to the bathroom. So why does it smell when we fart? Sometimes the gases that make us fart are also the gases that make farts smell. Tiny amounts of hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane combine with hydrogen sulfide and ammonia in the large intestine to give their farts their smell. Pee you, only one percent of the gases in farts smell bad, but certain foods make your farts smell worse than others such as eggs and meat. So what can we do to fart less? If you take more time when you are eating, make sure you chew your food really well. Digestion, as you know, starts in your mouth, and chewing your food really well will help that process go a little bit smoother. Avoid chewing gum and drinking pop. Pop is carbonated or full of bubbles, and when you chew gum, it will add to the amount of air you swallow. Both of these will increase the amount of gas being held in your stomach. Something else, get moving, Getting up and doing more physical activity will help your digestion process by increasing your digestion function and getting rid from some of your bloating and gas. Here are some fun facts about farts. Have you ever wondered who or what farts the most? Termites fart the most, followed by camels, zebras, sheep, cows, elephants and dogs. I remember my grandfather's little dog used to have the stinkiest farts ever, especially if we fed him some turkey. My grandmother used to get so upset with us. Did you know that boys fart more than girls? But girls' farts tend to smell worse. Farts are really fast. They have been clocked in at three point zero five meters per second. That is about seven miles per hour, and that is faster than your standard hoverboard. There are more than one hundred and fifty ways to say the word farked. For example, have you ever heard cutting one? Or a stinker? How about a butt sneeze? If you are looking for a laugh, you can google mister Methane on YouTube. He is famous for farting with music.
